The Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Retail Limited has commissioned its first Smart Self-Service Station in Abuja, introducing a technology-driven fuelling facility designed to provide customers with greater convenience, flexibility and access to multiple energy and mobility services.
The new facility, located on Bill Clinton Drive, Abuja, operates a 24-hour self-service system that enables motorists to independently complete fuel transactions, select the exact quantity of fuel they require and make payments at any time of the day or night.
The station, developed by NNPC Retail, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), in partnership with the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), brings conventional fuelling services together with electric vehicle charging, LPG, vehicle maintenance and lifestyle offerings in one location.
NNPC Ltd’s Executive Vice President, Downstream, Mumuni Dagazau, speaking at the commissioning ceremony, described the development as another significant milestone in the transformation of NNPC Retail.
The Smart Station demonstrates the company’s commitment to innovation, convenience, operational efficiency and delivering an improved customer experience, Dagazau said.
He also commended the Nigeria Immigration Service for its sustained cooperation, describing the partnership as an example of the institutional collaboration needed to develop modern energy infrastructure across the country.
The Managing Director of NNPC Retail, Huub Stokman, said the Smart Station was developed in response to changing consumer preferences and expectations within Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector.
According to him, Nigerian consumers increasingly expect quality petroleum products at competitive prices, prompt and friendly services, convenient payment options and additional value from retail outlets.
He added that customers, particularly younger Nigerians, are also demanding access to alternative energy solutions such as electric vehicle charging and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), alongside more sustainable services.
“More than ever, we need to meet the needs of Nigerian consumers. They want quality products at the right price, prompt and friendly service, more value-added offerings and convenient payment options,” Stokman said.
Customers also want to be rewarded for their loyalty and have access to more energy solutions, including electric vehicle charging and CNG, while receiving such services in a sustainable manner, he noted.
“That is precisely what this Smart Station represents,” he said.
The NNPC Retail Managing Director acknowledged the contributions of the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Africa Motor Works, technology partners, contractors and other stakeholders who contributed to the successful delivery of the project.
Stokman reaffirmed the company’s intention to expand the Smart Station model to other parts of Nigeria, while strengthening partnerships with public and private institutions to develop a more convenient and technology-enabled retail network focused on customers’ needs.
The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, in her remarks, congratulated NNPC on the commissioning of the facility.
Nandap, who was represented by the Deputy Comptroller General, Finance and Accounts, Saidu Bashir Daura, described the Smart Station as a model capable of encouraging greater investment in sustainable energy infrastructure and innovative transportation solutions.
The newly commissioned facility has 16 Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) pumps and two Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) pumps, with storage capacity of 180,000 litres of PMS and 5,000 litres of AGO.
Beyond conventional petroleum products, the Smart Station is equipped with an electric vehicle charging facility with an 86-point capacity, deployed in partnership with Africa Motor Works.
It also has an LPG dispensing facility, a modern lubricant service bay and a fully automated car wash, while provision has been made for the future installation of Compressed Natural Gas infrastructure.
A major feature of the facility is its renewable energy system. The station is powered entirely by more than 200 kilowatt-hours of installed solar capacity, further highlighting its focus on technology and sustainable energy solutions.
The facility also provides space for quick-service restaurants, a coffee shop and a convenience store, expanding its services beyond traditional petroleum retailing.
With the combination of fuel dispensing, electric vehicle charging, LPG, vehicle services, automated car washing, food, beverages and convenience retailing, NNPC Retail said the facility is designed to function as a modern mobility and lifestyle destination rather than merely a conventional filling station.
The commissioning marks a new phase in NNPC Retail’s efforts to modernise its retail network and respond to evolving customer expectations through technology, alternative energy solutions and integrated services.
