Pretty Gospel artiste, Helen Meju. Despite being a mother of two lovely kids, is still very hot. With an album that is making waves to her credit, she chatted with SOLIDNEWSNG.COM Online Magazine’s AZUH LILIAN, at her Festac Town Lagos Office, Excerpts…

Anything you would want us to know about you?
My name is Helen Meju, a Nigerian-American gospel artiste, I’m based in USA and I am happily married with two kids.
What makes Helen Meju different from the other gospel artistes?
I’m not judging anybody and I’m not competing with anybody. I’m doing this from my heart, and for what God did for me.
What inspired your going into music?
I will say the goodness of God, because I started singing at a very early age.
What age precisely?
I will say from 10 years old. I was in the church choir. I started with Anglican Church and when I grew up, I joined The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) where I was also singing in the church choir. I even ministered at the Redemption Camp.
Can you define your kind of music?
My kind music is gospel hip-hop. I don’t want to do the traditional gospel that people are used to. I want to do the kind of gospel that people can dance to, both the old, the young and everybody.
What inspires you to write your songs?
What inspires me is that God has been so good to me. I used to be in Nigeria, I went through a lot in my life, I trusted in God and God has been so faithful to me. That’s one of the things that inspire me. I have to give God back His praise. Actually, what really changed me is that I looked for kids and today, to the glory of God, I have two lovely
kids, a boy and a girl. So, that’s why I choose to praise God always because He’s so good to me.
Do you mind telling us the names of your kids?
Yes! My first son is Ikechukwu, and the girl is Ngozichukwu.
What is the secret behind your beautiful looks?
I would say I have peace in God. If you don’t have peace and you are stressed, you will be messed up; it tells on you. For me, it’s the peace of God that keeps me shinning. That same God that gave me peace will take me to a greater height. So, I am calm because my God is beautiful and I got to be beautiful like my father.
How long have you been in the music industry?
Since 2017. But I have released lots of songs. That
tells you I am joking.
Was the album produced here in Nigeria or abroad?
It was produced here in Nigeria. My engineer is here in Nigeria. Ziggy Mixed and mastered it and he’s the best producer. He’s the one doing it. He’s the best.
What is the greatest thing that God has done for you?
It’s making me to know him because without me knowing God, most of the things I go through, I won’t be able to overcome. I trust God in all situations, so the greatest thing is knowing God.
Why must one praise God?
The bible says God inhabits in the praises of his people. And that’s one of the reasons God loved David, because He called David the man after God’s hart, because David knows how to praise God. When you praise God, He arises from his throne and grants you your heart desires. That’s what I do, I use praises to bribe God.
What has your experience been like in the USA?
We have a lot of gospel artistes. We have the American gospel artistes and we have the Africans too. I know I have lots of gospel artistes as my friends and most of them are Africans. We all do it to praise God. Sometimes it’s challenging because some people want to divert to the American way. But as a Nigerian, I still want to do what my people
will relate to easily. It’s kind of a competition, but I am not competing with anybody.
What is the experience like in Nigeria?
It’s been wonderful. I have been accepted, a lot of people that listen to y my songs like them. They have been encouraging me, they love my songs and they have been dancing to the songs. Everybody is willing to help spread the gospel. I’m really happy and proud of my people here in Nigeria.
Is gospel music truly paying your bills?
Gospel music is not paying my bills, rather I am paying the bills for gospel music.
Have you released any album or single yet?
Yes!
Can you tell us some of the tracks you have the EP?
There’s Ekene, Baba Nkem, Papa Wey Dey Make Life Better, The Chimnemerem and more. The young, the old, everybody can dance to my songs.
What is the patronage like? How did your fans accept it?
People love the songs. A lot of people have accepted my songs, both the old and young and they dance to my music. Most places I go too, they say Helen Meju, we love your music and everybody is willing to help me promote the songs, because they love the songs.
Which of your songs do you like most?
I will tell you that I like Baba Nkem. Do you know why? Baba Nkem is like talking to my lover. Telling God, you are my own father, you are too much. Baba Nkem is very danceable too.
How soon would the videos be ready?
Baba Nkem video is out, The Chimnemerem video is also out, but New Born video will be out soon. It’s already in the process.
Who are the people you look up to in the Gospel music industry?
I have listened to a lot of Nigerian gospel music artistes, they are really blessed and talented artistes. Frank Edward is good; Sinach, she is really good. Those ones are my best.
