In this special DAYLIGHT feature written by AZUH AMATUS, we spotlight five of Nigeria’s most admired banking leaders: Tony Elumelu, Olusegun Alebiosu, Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, Roosevelt Ogbonna and Walter Akpani.

Tony Elumelu
Tony Elumelu is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most influential bankers and business leaders.
He began his banking journey in the early years of Nigeria’s financial sector and rose rapidly through the ranks before leading the transformation of Standard Trust Bank into one of the country’s most successful financial institutions.
His defining moment came when Standard Trust Bank merged with United Bank for Africa (UBA), creating one of Africa’s largest banking groups.
As Group Managing Director and later Chief Executive Officer of UBA, Elumelu spearheaded aggressive expansion across Africa, positioning the bank as a truly pan-African institution.
His leadership style, strategic vision and commitment to innovation earned him recognition within and outside Nigeria.
Beyond banking, he established Heirs Holdings and became one of Africa’s most respected investors and advocates of entrepreneurship.
Today, Elumelu serves as Chairman of UBA and Chairman of Heirs Holdings.
Through the Tony Elumelu Foundation, he has empowered thousands of young African entrepreneurs, reinforcing his legacy as a banker whose influence extends far beyond boardrooms and balance sheets.
He’s also the creator and promoter of Africapitalism.
Olusegun Alebiosu
Olusegun Alebiosu is one of Nigeria’s most experienced banking professionals, with more than three decades of experience spanning risk management, corporate banking, project financing and financial control.
He began his banking career in 1991 and held key positions at institutions including Ecobank, the African Development Bank, Coronation Merchant Bank and UBA before joining First Bank of Nigeria in 2016.
At FirstBank, Alebiosu distinguished himself as Group Chief Risk Officer before becoming Executive Director, Chief Risk Officer and Executive Compliance Officer.
His deep understanding of risk management and corporate governance played a major role in strengthening the bank’s operational resilience and strategic direction.
In June 2024, he was appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of FirstBank Group. Today, he leads one of Nigeria’s oldest and most respected financial institutions, overseeing its transformation agenda, digital expansion and continued growth across key markets.
Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe
Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe has built an outstanding reputation as one of Nigeria’s most successful female banking executives.
Before joining Fidelity Bank, she accumulated extensive experience in corporate and commercial banking, working with several leading financial institutions and developing expertise in business development, strategic management and financial services.
She joined Fidelity Bank as an Executive Director in 2015 and quickly became one of the institution’s most influential leaders.
Her strong focus on innovation, customer-centric banking and sustainable growth helped strengthen the bank’s position within Nigeria’s competitive financial sector.
In 2021, Onyeali-Ikpe made history as the first female Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Fidelity Bank.
Under her leadership, the bank has expanded its market presence, strengthened its digital banking offerings and enhanced shareholder value, making her one of the most admired banking leaders in the country.
Roosevelt Ogbonna
Roosevelt Ogbonna is a seasoned banker whose career spans more than two decades across treasury, risk management, commercial banking and corporate banking.
He joined Access Bank in 2002 after working at Guaranty Trust Bank and steadily rose through the institution’s leadership structure.
His rise within Access Bank was marked by several key appointments, including Executive Director of Commercial Banking and Deputy Managing Director.
Throughout these roles, he played a significant part in driving growth, expanding market share and strengthening the bank’s commercial banking operations.
In May 2022, Ogbonna was appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Access Bank.
Since assuming office, he has continued the bank’s expansion strategy across Africa and beyond, while reinforcing its reputation as one of the continent’s leading financial institutions.
He was also recognized as African Banker of the Year at the Africa Financial Summit.
Walter Akpani
Walter Akpani is widely respected for his entrepreneurial approach to banking and his role in building one of Nigeria’s most innovative financial institutions.
With more than three decades of banking experience, he has worked across treasury management, institutional banking, corporate banking and financial services development.
His career includes pioneering roles at Standard Trust Bank, Platinum Bank and other financial institutions.
A graduate of the University of Strathclyde in Scotland with a Master’s degree in Finance, Akpani established himself as a highly regarded treasury and banking professional.
His leadership credentials and industry expertise positioned him as one of the key figures behind the creation and growth of Providus Bank.
Today, Akpani serves as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Providus Bank.
Under his leadership, the bank has built a reputation for technology-driven banking, customer-focused services and innovative financial solutions, making it one of Nigeria’s most dynamic banking brands.
