The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, in a move aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery and improving patient care, has commissioned and handed over three rehabilitated 100-bed capacity wards to the National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos.
The project, executed by the NNPC Foundation Ltd./Gte., involved the comprehensive rehabilitation and upgrade of Wards G, H, and J of the hospital. The intervention included the installation of new beds and the introduction of a central medical gas system designed to enhance the quality and efficiency of care.
Other aspects of the upgrade comprised the replacement of roofing and ceilings, modernisation of electrical and mechanical systems, and installation of new vinyl flooring across the three wards. Before the intervention, the wards were reportedly in a deteriorated state, limiting their functionality and constraining the hospital’s in-patient capacity.
The Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, represented by the Chief Financial Officer, Adedapo Segun, peaking at the commissioning ceremony, stated that the company’s definition of profitability extends beyond financial performance to include measurable social impact.
The rehabilitation of the wards reflects the company’s commitment to improving lives through strategic interventions in key sectors, particularly healthcare, he noted.
The Managing Director of NNPC Foundation, Emmanuella Arukwe, said the project reinforces the Foundation’s role in supporting critical national infrastructure that has served Nigerians over the years. Emphasised that the initiative aligns with national healthcare priorities and demonstrates the Foundation’s focus on practical, impact-driven programmes.
In his remarks, the Medical Director of the hospital, Wakeel Lawal, disclosed that the management had sought intervention from NNPC Foundation due to the poor condition of the wards. He expressed appreciation to NNPC Ltd for responding to the request and delivering what he described as a transformation that meets international standards.
The intervention goes beyond physical rehabilitation, representing renewed hope for both patients and healthcare providers. A key highlight of the ceremony was the unveiling of a commemorative plaque to mark the completion and handover of the rehabilitated wards.
The Executive Vice President, Business Services at NNPC Ltd, Sophia Mbakwe, alongside community representatives including Rodiyallahu Alabi Yunusa, who represented Kazeem Bashua as Royal Father of the day, were present at the event.
